Nationally ranked number six Florida Gators battled Ohio State and clenched their second consecutive NCAA basketball title. This allows the team to schedule future games with the exhibition of their players in mind pitting their team against higher ranked teams that would normally be out of their reach in other NCAA sports.
Although the conference is going to hold more weight in choosing games, coaches have some control in choosing competition. Knowing their team can handle their own against postseason competitors they will opt to challenge more high-profile programs. This encourages the players in a more visible setting, increases fan attendance of those who want to see a better game, and makes for an interesting twist in the basketball season. The women’s NCAA teams vying for the honor of the Final Four are waiting to see what the officials will decide concerning when to schedule the championship because as it stand now it is overshadowed by the men’s. “To the extent that they’re in a shadow, it makes sense to me to give them full sunlight,” NCAA President Myles Brand was quoted, “They deserve it. They’re that good. The games are that good,” continuing on with, “It’s gotten a lot better in terms of parity, skill of players and fan interest over the years. I’m personally very pleased. I see this as a growth sport for the NCAA.”
By pushing the schedule back by a week the women’s championship would not be competing with any other events if it is tactfully placed between the men’s Final Four, the Masters, and the Frozen Four. The women’s tournament selection will continue to be held the day after the men’s, but they still contest, “We need our own show.” Vivian Stringer, Rutgers’ Coach supports, “The administrative side of everything, NCAA, the universities, have got much more of a responsibility to promote this sport. We need to make a much bigger step because whatever we’re doing is not enough.”
The NCAA is considering strengthening their marketing tactics when it comes to regionals and finds encouragement in the 25,000 fan increase in attendance for the first and second round games. Get tickets to Final Four and other NCAA games at StubHub.com.
