Decision time for Hoops Stars

Several high profile college basketball players have not officially made up their minds about entering the NBA Draft. The deadline for a decision to declare themselves eligible is Monday at 5:00 PM, making this weekend one of reflection and contemplation for many a young hoops star.
Among the players who still have not signed an agent or declared themselves eligible, the most notable few are probably Mike Conley, Jr., Daequan Cook, JamesOn Curry, Jeff Green, DeVon Hardin, and Spencer Hawes.
Decisions, decisions. It must be nice to be a player like Green, who must decide if he wants to enter the NBA to get paid very well to play pro basketball, or stay in college another year to compete for a national championship with Georgetown. We should all have such delightful problems. Unfortunately, all we have as college hoops fans is the choice between which team to buy NCAA Basketball tickets for at StubHub.com. But, hey, that’s not such a painful decision, either.

Florida Athletes Suspended

Two University of Florida athletes were suspended indefinitely last week following the news that they had been arrested for purchasing marijuana from an undercover police informant. Brandon James and Brandon Powell will share first names and an uncertain future with the Gators’ football and basketball teams, respectively. Powell played only about two minutes per game last season for the Gators basketball team. He was expected to compete with two new recruits, Nick Calathes and Jai Lucas, as well as returning guard Walter Hodge for playing time next college hoops season.

Powell had previously made headlines for throwing a punch on his way to the locker room as fans stormed the court after Vanderbilt defeated the Gators late last season. So, you might not get to see Powell in a Florida uniform for a few games next season, but if you would like to see the Gators anyways, you can ger Florida Gators basketball tickets at StubHub.com.

Louisville: the anti-Arkansas

There were plenty of stories at ESPN.com about the Arkansas Razorbacks’ fall from grace in pretty much all aspects of their athletic program. For the Louisville Cardinals, however, the story has been very different. Recently Pat Forde did an article about a rare stat that the Cardinals just acquired: they are one of only two programs that has been in a college world series, a BCS bowl game and an NCAA Final Four in the past three years. The other school on that list is the University of Florida.

The Cardinals made that short list in a bit of an unexpected manner, considering that their athletic budget is about half of that of their Gainesville competitors, and they get only a fraction of the Gators’ hype and recruiting advantages.

So if you are looking for a team to cheer for, you might want to give thought to getting Louisville Cardinals basketball tickets at StubHub.com for a game or two next season.

Billy D Still with Gators

It looks like the Florida Gators will get to keep Billy Donovan. He was flirting with the idea of coaching for the Orlando Magic, but has settled back in with his Gators. The way Donovan has gone about the possible move can be equated to Kobe Bryant’s recent trade-talk circus acts. Well, no one can really match Kobe on that point, but you get the meaning. And distinguishing himself even further from Kobe, Donovan himself even apologized to the Magic, fans, and beyond, admitting that he had made a mistake.

Donovan actually went as far as being formally introduced by the Magic before he withdrew, thus proving cold feet is not only for the wedding altar. He explained that his passion and heart was still deeply entrenched in Gainesville; quite possibly forever. It’s curious to consider the finality of his decision. How can one come so close to coaching in the NBA, step down within 24 hours, and then say that the NCAA counsel will be their everlasting resting place? Any way you look at it, it’s refreshing to have Donovan’s skills back in Gainesville. Get in on the action and get your NCAA Final Four tickets today at StubHub.com.

Carroll Declares

Utah State’s Jaycee Carroll wants to know who’s interested. He recently made himself eligible for the NBA Draft, but no teams seem to be scrambling yet to get Carroll’s attention. Carroll is at least hoping that an NBA team will say hello, taking a step forward in improving his draft stock for next year’s 2008 Draft. New draftees truly are similar to items in a new product line; they need to be talked up in order to get their price up.

Carroll has not employed an agent and can still return to the Utah State Aggies for his senior season if it comes down to it. Carroll said, “It has always been a dream of mine to play in the NBA and I owe it to myself and my family to do whatever I can to make that dream come true. I think it is important for the development of my game to see how I compare against the best collegiate basketball players in the country.” Get in on the action and get your NCAA Final Four tickets today at StubHub.com.

Donovan Returns to Gainesville

The long and sordid saga of Billy Donovan has finally ended, according to epsn.com.  Donovan, who left Florida University to coach the Orlando Magic, then abruptly changed his mind and decided that he didn’t want to leave Florida, so he got out of his contract with the Magic so he could go back and sign with the Gators, who then paid him even more money than they had originally offered him after he first led the team to back-to-back national titles.

Donovan may get a free pass from most of the media, but at best what he did was unfortunate and unprofessional.  At worst, what he did was deceitful and manipulative.  One can argue that Donovan simply made a mistake and did his best to correct it as quickly as possible.  However, not knowing the man, to the casual observer, it looks like he used the Magic to squeeze the Gators for a few more bucks.

Georgia Gets Athletes to Attend Class

The University of Georgia has implemented a policy of punishing students who continually skip their classes and academic appointments with small fines and suspensions. The initial trial semester has displayed that the policy is quite effective at getting student-athletes to attend classes and improving the overall GPA of the athletes at Georgia.

It is always a good thing when administrators, especially at a very big, very successful school like Georgia, realize that academics is the reason people go to college, not sports. They don’t call them student-athletes for nothing. The fines are only $10 per class, which doesn’t seem like much except when you look back on how many classes you missed in college and start to do the math.

Luckily, StubHub.com does not believe in fining you for not showing up to sporting games. In fact, you can make money by missing games and selling your Georgia Bulldogs Basketball tickets.

NBA Draft Nears

The National Basketball Association Draft will commence in a matter of weeks. Scheduled for June 28th, the NBA Draft will decide the fate of many of this year’s top college basketball players. There are plenty of people who have theories about which player is going where, though the general consensus is that Greg Oden and Kevin Durant will go 1-2.

ESPN has a few nice theories about how the rest of the draft will shake out, and you can find plenty of mock drafts around. All collegiate athletes have until June 18th to pull out of an early NBA entrance bid. Until that time, your favorite hoops stars can try to test the draft waters to see where they will end up. If they decide to stay in school, then you can get NCAA basketball tickets at StubHub.com to see them. If they decide to stay in the draft, you’ll have to get NBA tickets.

Donovan-Kobe Comparisons

Considering the fact that two of the biggest stories in basketball right now have to do with people backing out of things- Billy Donovan backing out of his Orlando Magic coaching job and Kobe Bryant backing down from his trade demands- it’s hard not to do a precise comparison of the two.

Pat Forde of ESPN, (who always has a good take on things, if you as me) seems to think that everything will be fine, both in LA and in Gainesville. Of course, both men will have to suffer the consequences of their indecisions, and the debate can go back and forth about who will suffer worse. However, I think Donovan will be happier with his life at Florida than Bryant will be if he stays or goes. As Forde points out, winning fixes everything.

Plus, I’m just glad that we don’t have to change our ways. At StubHub.com you can still get Lakers tickets to see Kobe and Florida Gators basketball tickets to see Donovan.

Donovan Wants to be Back at Florida

Somebody get Sean Hannity on the phone, we’ve got ourselves a flip-flopper!

Newly hired Orlando Magic head coach Billy Donovan has decided that he wants to return to the University of Florida to coach the Gators. Donovan will seek to rescind his contract with the Magic after attempting in vain to smear the fresh ink of his signature. When the smearing failed, Magic owner Rich DeVos pulled the paper off the table, prompting Donovan to make several swiping lunges for the document. After thwarting Donovan’s initial attempts, DeVos’s face and demeanor quickly changed to reveal his true identity- the manifestation of temptation.

Until the issue is settled, Florida Gators tickets at StubHub.com will still be to see a team with no coach as of yet.
