Dawkins to Stanford; Thabeet to Stay at UConn

First up: Stanford’s old coach, Trent Johnson, left for a job at LSU a short while ago. And since then, Stanford has been searching for a good replacement. Well, they have found one. According to this story from CBSSports.com, the Cardinal will be coached by one Johnny Dawkins, a student of the Duke Coach K system. Johnny comes with a lot going for him- the Cardinal are a perpetually good college basketball team, and they have a very good reputation for getting top talent. However, he also has some trouble ahead. Stanford just lost two of their biggest players from last season, Brook and Robin Lopez, who are headed to the NBA Draft. We think he’ll do fine, but his first season might be a little rocky depending on the recruiting class Trent Johnson brought in this past season.

Next Up: Hasheem Thabeet, the 7-foot-3 center from UConn and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, has decided to stay in school next year. Instead of testing the NBA Draft waters, Thabeet is going to keep hitting the books and the boards in college. The Final Four Blog is a big fan of this decision. UConn had Final Four potential this past March, but the plucky San Diego Toreros pulled off an amazing upset in the first round after UConn’s point guard went down to injury. Next year, the Huskies might try for a deep Tourney run, and Thabeet will get more press- and a higher draft position.
