Gear Up For the Hoops Season

The hoops season will be here before you know it, and you don’t want to be caught unawares when your favorite team is kicking tail and you look like you just got off the bus from Nowheresville. What we mean to say is: Get your team gear now, while it’s the offseason. When basketball season picks up, there’s sure to be a rush to get the best hoops merchandise. Specifically, you ought to try to get some gear to wear- like t-shirts and jerseys. These items, which are great for basketball fans, will usually be marked down because they’re out of season.

Checking out the National Champion Kansas Jayhawks team store, we can see that there are a lot of good basketball items that are still selling well. Here’ s the page of “top sellers.” While the national championship videos are ahead by a lot, there are also some awesome t-shirts commemorating the title run. This is the kind of stuff you should get now, while they’re only about $20. Football items like the fleece vest and hooded sweatshirt are going for a premium.

George Mason Final Four Rings Taking Bids

The Final Four Blog ran across an interesting read this morning in our scouring of the college basketball headlines. SportsIllustrated.com is reporting that George Mason Final Four rings are up for auction currently on eBay. As you probably remember well, George Mason was the darling of the 2005-2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, a high seed that made it all the way to the Final Four in an improbable, miraculous run. When you get to the Final Four, you get some nice gold rings, and one of them, apparently, made it’s way to a pawn shop in Virginia, and then on to the ever-popular auction site eBay.

According to a reader who did a little research, the rings belong to a guy named Scherrens, although there was never a player named Scherrens on that famous George Mason team. Instead, the name is that of the Senior Vice President of the University. Were these rings stolen? Did the VP just not feel much attachment to the accomplishment, and thus the rings? Or is this a hoax? Perhaps there is more to come on this story. And if there is, we’ll give it to you.

Hoops Vacations Pay Off

Five top college basketball programs spent their summer vacations overseas, training and participating in tournaments with foreign teams. Well, not all of them went overseas, per se, but they did go abroad. At Sports Illustrated.com you can take a look at an article written by Seth Davis about these trips. Kansas, Missouri, Notre Dame, Purdue and Southern Illinois all went on these trips, although of these five powerhouse teams, only Notre Dame and Purdue went across an ocean. The Fighting Irish went to Ireland (surprise, surprise) and the Boilermakers went to Australia.

Besides the cultural and fun-having benefits of these trips, they’re also very important for building team unity and cohesiveness. They also allow the teams to practice officially during the offseason, something that’s normally not allowed under NCAA rules. These trips are regulated though. You can’t do it every year, or the NCAA would come down on you. But the Final Four Blog is a big fan of broadening ones horizons, so we suggest that they de-regulate these cross-border basketball excursions so more young men can see the world.
