Stock Sliding for Louisville, Gonzaga

Tough times have befallen Louisville at a time when it is critical for the team to build a base of wins. The Big East portion of the Cardinals’ schedule is about to start up, but the they’re dropping game after game to non-conference teams. Yesterday Louisville lost to UNLV in the closing seconds, adding another reason for Rick Pitino’s team to slide in the next edition of the polls. When the season began the Cardinals were ranked No. 3 in the nation, but at No. 18 and falling fast, the Cardinals need to get on track quickly. They play their rival, Kentucky before entering into the difficult conference portion of the year.

Gonzaga hasn’t been fairing much better. The Zags have been- and probably will be until the next poll comes out- the highest ranked mid-major in the nation. However, they dropped back-to-back home games against Oklahoma and Portland State. Then, yesterday they lost to Utah 66-65 when they failed to score a buzzer beater. How far will they drop in the next poll? Tough to say. Losing to Oklahoma is nothing to worry about, but neither Portland State nor Utah were ranked. Presumably, once Gonzaga gets to their conference schedule, they will have some weaker opponents to build back confidence.
